Pineapple Lily

Last summer’s flower
The cultivar E. bicolor ‘Alba’ has plain white flowers and lacks any purple coloration.
Perfection in every bloom! Surely a Hand greater than ours has made this!

Eucomis bicolor, the variegated pineapple lily or just pineapple lily, is a bulbous species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae, native to Southern Africa. The pale green, purple-margined flowers are arranged in a spike, topped by a “head” of green leaflike bracts.

This new season’s growth
Snails are very fond of the leaves … if they get a chance….

In cultivation, Eucomis bicoloris is not fully frost-hardy.  Sun exposure and plentiful water are required in summer for successful flowering.

The Pineapple Lily has gained the Royal Horticultural Society‘s Award of Garden Merit.
